Natural-derived / Biomass Thermosetting Resin 'Shellac' (Koyo Chemical product)

Shellac is a natural resin obtained by refining a resinous substance secreted by insects (lac scale insects). It is used in industry, pharmaceuticals, and food.

Shellac is obtained by extracting and refining the raw material "seedlac" through methods such as heat melting, alkaline extraction, and solvent extraction. We offer a variety of products, primarily focusing on "refined shellac," which is highly purified through solvent extraction, and "white shellac," which is bleached during the alkaline extraction process. 【Features】 ■ It is a thermosetting resin unlike any other natural resin. ■ It can be easily thermally melted (also possesses thermoplastic properties). ■ It readily dissolves in alcohol at room temperature and does not dissolve in other organic solvents. ■ It produces a smooth, glossy film with excellent adhesion and abrasion resistance. ■ Once thermoset, it becomes a tough film that is resistant to heat and solvents. ■ It can be easily dissolved in water. ■ It has excellent oil resistance. ■ It is an electrical insulator. ■ There are formulations that dissolve food additive grade products in ethanol. 【Applications】 Paints, insulating varnishes, electrical insulating adhesives (mica, coils, transformers), release agents (adhesive tape, masking tape, protective paper for synthetic resin sheets), adhesives, printing inks, tablet coatings (enteric), protective coatings for fruits, glossing (chocolate, citrus fruits). *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us.

What are thermoplastic resins and thermosetting resins?

Make effective use of limited resources! Classify into two types with different properties.

Plastics can be broadly classified into two types based on their properties: thermoplastic resins and thermosetting resins. Thermoplastic resins liquefy upon heating without undergoing a chemical reaction and solidify upon cooling, forming linear chain polymers. In other words, thermoplastic resins become liquid at their glass transition temperature or melting point, and solidify again when below that temperature, allowing them to transition between liquid and solid states. A common analogy is that of cookies and chocolate: thermosetting resins are like cookies; once baked, they cannot be melted again in the oven, and while they may burn at high temperatures, they do not liquefy. On the other hand, thermoplastic resins, like chocolate, melt and change shape when heated to a certain temperature. *For more detailed information, please refer to the related links. Feel free to contact us for further inquiries.*

Thermosetting resin CBZ for CFRP for drones

Contributing to the lightweight and cost reduction of drones with excellent productivity and CFRP material properties.

In the drone industry, reducing the weight of the airframe is essential for improving flight performance. Weight reduction leads to longer flight times, increased payload capacity, and enhanced maneuverability, ultimately enabling a wider range of applications. CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) is gaining attention as a material for drone airframes due to its lightweight yet high strength properties. However, selecting the appropriate resin is crucial for the manufacturing of CFRP. The CBZ series is a thermosetting resin that excels in adhesion to carbon fibers and provides excellent mechanical properties for FRP. This allows for weight reduction in drones while achieving high strength and durability, contributing to improved product reliability. 【Application Scenarios】 * Drone airframes * Drone components * Structural materials requiring weight reduction 【Effects of Implementation】 * Improved flight performance due to weight reduction * Achievement of high strength and durability * Contribution to cost reduction
